There is nothing worse than being punished for your strong work ethic and good deeds but, sadly, that is the way it goes sometimes. Often the only reward you get for kicking butt at your job is...more work. Instead of finishing a task and being rewarded with some time off and a chance to kick your feet up, you are given another stack of something else to do. This is because so many companies like to load more work onto the backs of those who have proven their abilities. You did a good job with this project, they say. Great, here are ten more we need completed by next week. No thank you, no congratulations or gift card, no raise. Just a heavier workload.
But that doesnt mean you should stop working hard and doing your best. Not at all, you should always remain proud of the hard work you do. Just understand that certain admirable traits, such as showing up on time and getting stuff done before deadline, can be seen as a beacon to your employers and they may look at you as the new camel who needs a million straws on its back.
Try to remember when you are getting loaded up and bogged down at work it's because you are a good employee and, in some bizarre and twisted way, this is how your employers are rewarding you. Try not to think of how stressful it is or how your co-workers who come in late and slack off DON'T get punished. Try not to think about that. No, try to remember that extra work and pressure is the workplace equivalent of a pat on the back. Yay?
You know what, the more I think about it, the sorrier I feel for that early morning worm. He should have just called in sick and slept in late.
A poster with a worm wearing a necktie with the sun rising in the distance. "Punctuality: as for the early worm - well, he gets eaten alive by the first hungry bird that comes along."
