Of all the animals on Earth, it seems that we share the most time and space with birds. Theyre everywhere and we mingle with them more than pretty much any other species - especially here in Central Texas.
Yet for all the experience we have with birds, we know very little about them. We dont know why they think the way they do. We dont know why they act the way they act. Their choices and actions seem bizarre and confusing, almost hostile at times. And, honestly, they make some dumb decisions too. For all the smart things they do (did you know crows can create tools and remember faces?) they do even more stupid ones. Its a shame too because they have a skill that all humans longs for, and one of my favorite things in the world: the ability to fly. Sometimes it feels that such a wonderful gift is wasted on such bird-brained creatures. Then again, they probably look down at us and ask why we do the things we do. Touché, birds.
A bird tries to run across the road to beat an oncoming truck. "Why do birds do this?"
