Something that is very unique to American business culture is the idea of employment at-will; that is, you are free to leave your job at any time and your employer is free to terminate your employment at any time. While many public-sector and trade-union covered jobs now have "just cause" termination clauses, the majority of workers in the United States can be terminated for no specific reason at any time. Having worked at over a dozen high-growth startups in my career I have been on both the lucky and unlucky side of firings, layoffs, furloughs and reductions in force. I feel like the idea of at-will employment adds extra and unnecessary stress to a large number of underrepresented people in one of the largest and wealthiest nations in the world.
