Weather prediction is a tricky thing. I know that I lambaste local news channel meteorologists for inaccurately predicting the weather, but hyper-local and meta weather prediction is no simple task. In extremely simple terms Earth's weather is powered by the uneven heating of the oceans' surface, and driven by the jet streams. As simple as this sounds, an incredibly large amount of information is required to accurately predict the weather. The U.S. National Weather Service uses data collected from all over the planet fed into the Global Forecast System that runs on one of the fastest supercomputers in the world. In February of 2020 the NOAA announced they would be upgrading to approximately 40 petaflops of computing capacity; that is 40,000,000,000,000,000 floating-point computations per second.
