Sometimes I think elementary schools should teach how to be a normal, functioning human being. They could call it Conversations 101. It could teach you things like how to make small talk and how to be interested in the mundane and how to recover some simple mistakes when talking with others. Interactions with others - especially strangers - can be a tough nut to crack and there are many ways to mess it up. You can mispronounce words, say the wrong thing, accidentally interrupt someone or just stutter and stammer. The possibilities are endless!
You shouldnt beat yourself up when you make a mistake while having normal conversation, everyone does it. Everyone stumbles over their words or says something that makes no sense. I shouldnt beat myself up over it and neither should you. But it sure is easy to be hard on yourself after you make a mistake when talking to others. There are few things that are as humiliating as telling a waiter to enjoy his meal.
