The Story Behind Subtitles Computer Repairmen

Illustrated by EEK.

There was a time when finding a computer repairman was harder than finding the Holy Grail. Before the rise of the Genius Bar, Geek Squad and other companies, getting your CPU fixed was an ordeal. You had to send it off or do it yourself and it all cost an arm and a leg. But things have gotten better in the decades since the rise of the personal computer. Still, the process is confusing and frustrating because it seems the computer repairman takes pride in losing you in techno jargon. Computers are confusing, with all their working parts and complicated interiors. Hearing a repairman list all the problems that need fixing can be like hearing someone speak Latin. Perhaps we need a smartphone app that translates tech talk into layman's terms. Of course, what happens when our smartphone breaks?
