The Story Behind Light at the End of the Tunnel

"I can see the light at the end of the tunnel" is an expression that has really solid staying power. I feel like I hear this metaphor at least once a week during work meetings regardless of what company I'm employed at or what industry that company is in. However, every time I hear the phrase the first thing that pops into my mind is the well-worn joke about the light at the end of the tunnel being the light of an oncoming train and not the light at the end of the tunnel.
